Photography: The Democratic Art
Student work 2007
Photography & Self Representation
Photography is often referred to as the most democratic of the art mediums, which is one of many reasons why photography is an integral part of the Artist Inside Program. By providing incarcerated art students the rare opportunity to use cameras without the photographic and art “rules”, which can become a barrier to creativity, students are able achieve a unique opportunity for self-expression and autonomy.
Photography like other art mediums can be therapeutic & transformative. It opens doors for self-representation, discussion & story telling. Many photographers believe that all photographs carry messages, however, often the messages are so deeply embedded within the image that those who view them do not receive them.
